Virtual reality dementia (VRD)

Experience sensory challenges of dementia and ageing

Virtual reality dementia (VRD) training is an immersive, empathy building experience designed to simulate the sensory and cognitive challenges face by people living with dementia and age-related impairments. VRD is part of our broader age friendly training initiative, supporting inclusive environments for older adults.

How does VRD help?

  • See through their eyes: VRD training allows users to experience the world from the perspective of someone living with dementia, helping reduce accidents and improve care outcomes.
  • Confidence boost: VRD training learners are up to 275% more confident in applying what they’ve learned compared to traditional methods.
  • Design insight: Participants gain practical understanding of how lighting, layout, and colour contrast affect people living with dementia, encouraging dementia-friendly design.
  • Empathy in action: Experiencing cognitive decline virtually builds empathy and motivates real-world change to support independent living.

What can be expected from a VRD workshop?

  • 360 degree VR environments: Explore realistic settings such as care homes and kitchens, with guided tours and empathy filters to simulate sensory challenges.
  • Solo and shared modes: Choose between individual learning or group sessions with facilitator-led experiences.
  • Design adaptation modules: Learn how to create dementia-friendly spaces that reduce agitation, improve safety, and support independence.

Who is VRD training for?

  • Health and social care professionals
  • Designers and architects
  • Retail and hospitality industry staff
  • Public sector teams
  • University students
  • Anyone supporting or interacting with older adults

Format and duration:

  • In-person sessions lasting approximately two hours

“Having previously worked with dementia patients for 8 years, I thought I knew everything, but this training opened my eyes to how patients must feel.”

“VRD training enabled awareness of what some people have to go through with visual and or hearing impairment. I learned the different techniques to make a more user friendly area for someone [living] with dementia with some great tips. It was a really insightful experience.”

“This will assist me in engaging with people [living] with dementia, their families and carers.”

“This is a really good resource - great way of helping us understand how the condition affects people day to day and the difficulties that they can encounter as well as showing ways that they can be supported.”
