Meet Kathleen, who was referred to Age NI's Check in and Chat service in 2021. She lives alone in a rural area, and was experiencing loneliness and social isolation due to her mobility and health problems.
"I honestly had no one to talk to, days could pass without hearing from anyone."
She looks forward to her weekly call now, having built a genuine friendship with her volunteer over the past several years.
"It takes time to build the relationship and find out what you have in common, but it's great when it happens. Now we chat about baking and sewing, I get to take a walk down memory lane and give her advice and suggestions."
Kathleen sees the benefit of a Check in and Chat call for anyone in a similar position to herself, as the opportunity to connect and bond without leaving the house has brought so much to her life.
