Summer Appeal - Martin's Story There are over 350,000 older people living in Northern Ireland. And over the next twenty years that figure is expected to increase by 30%. As the number of older people increases so does the pressure on our services. That’s why we need your help. If you can, please donate to our Summer Appeal today and help us provide emotional support, care and advice to vulnerable older people like Martin. Read his story below Donate Martin’s Story Our care staff are extremely dedicated to their roles, and it’s their compassion, empathy and willingness to go the extra mile which makes each older person in their care feel supported, valued and respected. Martin started receiving help from Pat and Sharon in our home support care team after he was diagnosed with dementia. They provide emotional support for Martin when he is feeling low, as well as helping him get out to the shops or local activities. Martin is a passionate advocate for the help Age NI offers to people in need. ‘The staff at Age NI are my lifeline. When I found out I had dementia I was in a really bad place. My three sisters had lived with dementia, so I had seen it all before. I thought to myself, I’m not going to go down this road. I’m not afraid to say that I was suicidal. When you’re sitting in a room, on your own, and you’re crying, and you don’t want your family to see you crying, you sink into depression. Pat and Sharon saved my life. Now, when I'm feeling down, I can pick up the phone and know I have someone to talk to. They help me get about and out of the house, and nothing is ever too much hassle. I have four sons and they're all fantastic and so supportive, but you can’t expect them to all stop working. By getting support from Age NI some of the burden has been lifted from their shoulders. They have peace of mind and know that I’m in safe hands when they can’t be there. I really believe that getting support from Pat and Sharon has been the best medicine. Without Age NI I’d have no life, my sons would have no life. I have no doubt that without Age NI’s help I wouldn’t be here today. If sharing my story helps someone it’s all for the good. I’d say to anyone, if you think you have dementia, go and get help straight away. My family is getting help, and I’m getting help, I really can’t credit Age NI enough.
